Our 5^th event of the year was held at East Sussex National Golf Club, a great venue for our Strokeplay and Stableford Competitions. The East course was in good condition and challenging, with lots of sand and some very big greens. It was an extremely hot day with little cloud cover, so lots of suntan lotion was applied and frequent drinks were essential. 

At the pre round briefing the vice-captain explained that for the stroke play competition you had to finish every hole and take a provisional ball if you had any doubts about where your ball had gone.  The 4 ball of Jerry, Graham, Kevin and Andy duly complied but the rules about the amount of swearing per shot might need revising – shocking!!

We had a field of 27 players, split into 2 competitions. 15 golfers with a handicap of 17 or lower aiming to take the Stroke Play Shield off the current holder Andy Williams and 12 golfers with a handicap of 18 or over competing for the Stableford Shield. 

There was a late trolley incident with Frank’s tyre coming off one of his wheels, which was enjoyed by all those watching the last 4 ball complete their round.

The average score for the day was 28.31 off the white tees, with 8 players dropping into the mid twenties or lower, whilst there were some good scores in the thirties – 12 birdies were posted.

The strokeplay competition was won by John Miller with a net score of 75, although there were also 4 others on 75 (Andrew Jenner – runner up on count back, Phil Taylor, Jerry Watkiss and Rod Lunn also shared the same score). Fair play to Kevin Leftly, who had 2 x 10’s on his card but still finished the round with a big smile and even bought the first round in the bar – what a Gent!

The Stableford Competition was won by a great round from Will Lunn scoring 37 points.  He was closely followed by Keith Townsend on 35 while the defending champion John Collingwood was out of contention due to competing in the stroke play shield this year.

Rod Lunn hit a great shot to win nearest the pin on the 13^th and Frank Goulding hit two excellent shots to win nearest the pin in 2 on the 6^th.

The day was rounded off with a social drink outside for the prize giving. A very good day all round

The societies next event is on Thursday 16^th July and its Captains Day at Dale Hill.
