GBH Trophy Order of Play – September 2024 – Royal Ashdown GC
The West Course measures only 5,606 yards from the back tees, but despite its humble length, it’s not an easy course on which to post a low score. Small greens with devilish runoffs provide a serious workout for the short game, and you’ll need to keep the ball on the straight and narrow. The home hole measures 435 yards from the tips; it’s not the longest par four on the card as that arrives at the 450-yard 14th, but the 18th is a tough hole to negotiate in regulation. A left-to-right tee shot must negotiate a stream that twice snakes across the fairway. Many golfers choose to play this excellent finale as a three shotter, hoping their last pitch will herald an up and down for the win. The West Course was former member Christopher Robin’s course of choice from Winnie the Pooh fame.
Venue Royal Ashdown Forest (West Course) not to be confused with the Old Course! Postcode for Sat Nav purposes is RH18 5LR

Currently an even number of 24 players competing across the competitions as follows:
GBH Trophy – This is a pairs competition
Each team will play as a pair and record the best stableford score for that pair on each hole i.e. Player 1 scores 2 stableford points and the other, 3 stableford points on a hole – the team score is the highest of the two, so 3 stableford points count towards the GBH competition.
In addition, a “joker” is available for each player that can be played on one hole, and one hole only (NB: each team member can select a hole of their choosing which may well be different to their playing partner). Before teeing off the player should inform his playing partners that they will be playing their joker on this hole. That players then scores doubled for that one hole. Please mark the card to show where each joker was used.
Individual Stableford Competition
In addition, please could each member record their own individual stableford score – which will be entered into the player of the year competition and may also win a prize as the Best Individual Stableford score for the day (off full society handicaps without the joker doubling up !!).

Order of play
Tee times start at 10.30am. So, Thursday’s provisional order of play (subject to change) is as follows: –
Tee | Team | HCP | Team | HCP |
10.30 | Peter Smith & Kevan Gill | 22 & 22 | Graham Smith & Simon Luck | 9 & 22 |
10.36 | Richard Hannam & Micky Mann | 8 & 16 | Alan Bond & Phil Taylor | 12 & 10 |
10.42 | Scott Wightman & Stuart Bourne | 26 & 11 | John Collingwood & Chris Buck | 26 & 20 |
10.48 | Rob Montagu & Kevin Leftley | 29 & 16 | Frank Goulding & Mark Hughes | 33 & 15 |
10.54 | Jerry Watkiss & David Howroyd | 16 & 24 | Joe Carroll & Andrew Burnett | 30 & 11 |
11.00 | Will Lunn & Rod Lunn | 36 & 16 | Tony Willmott & James Gallifant | 19 & 29 |
IMPORTANT: – Each individual should keep a record of their own individual score and should not rely on others to keep their score on say a team card. Best practice is to swap cards on the first tee within your group and keep your own score as “marker”. When marking a card for someone you have the responsibility to ensure it is accurate, clearly written and that the individual and yourself are happy it is accurate. Really sorry to be a “grump” but some cards submitted need a degree in hieroglyphics to interpret and thus we need everyone to take a greater responsibility for ensuring a well written and accurate card is submitted for them. The card below as an example shows two birdies and an eagle with a couple of pars and a load of blobs and this was one of the better ones !!
On a brighter note we look forward to seeing you on Thursday – please note the numbers are perfect for a pairs comp so please do shout as early as possible should you not be able to make it.
