Hannam & Mann “ham and egg” their way to victory winning the GBH Trophies by 1 shot from Messrs Lunn & Lunn on a lovely afternoon at the Ashdown West Course
A lovely day, possibly the last really good one of this summer, saw 24 players compete for this pairs competition with the added interest of a joker being played on one hole by each player which doubles their stableford points for this pairs competition.
An interesting day with a few events to note.
- The owner of a nice new brown car was giving a statement about a big dent in the door. They reported “I had been watching these golfers for a while and was confident that the middle of the fairway was the safest place to be !!” Graham S hitting a cracker down the middle of the par 5 hitting the car full on and bouncing back 20ft.
- You are excited and adrenaline is pumping as you are playing your joker on a short par three where you have the potential of three points for a par doubling up to 6 for the GBH Comp. You hit your first and it disappears into the jungle never to be seen again. You despondently hit a another from the tee (your third) to see it bounce and roll across the green and dropping into the cup for a three and 6 GBH points going on the card for Peter Smith.
- Imagine what would happen if a “no gimmies” champion missed a series of 12inch putts? They say that turkey’s would not vote for Christmas but will the vice-captain continue to vote to putt out?
- Also of note was our Treasurer hitting their partners ball whilst they were playing their joker scuppering any chance of a big score !
Team Competition
Worthy of note is the Lunn’s amassed 7 extra points using their jokers to perfection to get within a point of the eventual winners. However, Hannam & Mann “ham and egged” well with one or the other doing well on almost every hold – it was on only one hole that they scored the same number of points so wasted nothing!!
Place | Player | Score |
Winners | Richard Hannam & Micky Mann | 49 |
Second | Rod Lunn & Will Lunn | 48 |
Third | Frank Goulding & Mark Hughes | 46 |
Individual Stableford
David Howroyd had an excellent round of golf achieving the best individual score by a couple of shots. This was played off full society handicaps without the double points joker score counting: –

Winner | David Howroyd | 37 |
Second | Peter Smith | 35 (B9CB 19) |
Third | Micky Mann | 35 (B9CB 16) |
Nearest the Pin in Two (15th Hole 280 yards).
Phil Taylor – with a good drive and excellent chip and run up to the whole takes this prize. No birdie though!!
Nearest the Pin in One (6th Hole 144 yards).
Graham Smith with cracker to within 3 feet. Again, near but no cigar in terms of converting the birdie.
