John Miller wins Freddie Jones Cup for second year
Our 6th event of the year was held at Dale Hill Golf Club on the Woosnam Course, a great venue for Captains Day and The Freddie Jones Cup. The course was extremely dry with balls running distances one can normally only dream of. The greens were true and in excellent condition, although a little slow.
Over coffee at our pre match briefing, Captain Andrew Burnett explained the ‘fines system’ to generate donations for his chosen charity, The Alzheimer’s Society. The fines and purchasing of mulligans made it a tricky day for the handicap secretary, with scores requiring a bit of recalibrating to take into account mulligans and jokers!
The current holder of the Freddie Jones Cup John Miller turned up with it not engraved from his last win! It was a good job he retained it (on countback) so that he could do a proper job on it and get it engraved twice now!
We had a field of 21 players creating 7 teams of 3. For the team competition it was best 2 from 3, except for all 3 scores would count on the par 3’s.
Graham Meadows decided that the captain had not put a limit on mulligans and decided on his round he needed 8! Robert Montague mentioned his putting was not great and paid the price for 3 putting 10 times! There were several complaints about slow play, and the culprits were in the middle of the pack somewhere as the first 3 ball romped home in 4 hours 3 holes ahead of the 2nd group and the last 3 ball in 4 hours 45 minutes.
The average score for the day was the highest so far this year 30.86 off the yellow tees and 12 birdies were posted.
As we mentioned earlier The Freddie Jones Cup was won by John Miller on countback from Kevin Leftley, both with 38 points. Closely followed by Richard Hannam on 36. The team competition was won with a massive 100 points by Andrew Jenner, John Miller and Graham (Mulligan) Meadows.
Andrew Jenner hit a great shot to win nearest the pin on the 5th completing his birdie and Alan Bond hit two excellent shots to win nearest the pin in 2 on the 17th, although he finished with a par.
The day was rounded off with burger and chips and a few social drinks.
