Cooden Results

Our 8th event out of 11 in the Mayfield Order of Merit competition and the scores at the top of the leader board are getting tight.  Cooden Beach was in good condition, greens were true although the play was a little slow.  The individual competition was for the Mayfield Cup and we had our normal team competition.

We had a field of 25 due to a late injury withdrawal which meant we sent out 3 balls first followed by the 4 balls. There was some exceptional individual scoring indicating that perhaps we should have gone off the white tees.

Graham Meadows has a new nickname after hitting rather a lot of bunkers and now answers to Lawrence of Arabia.  Rob Montagu had the putt of the day sinking a blind putt from all of 80ft.

The team competition had 4 teams of 4 and 3 teams of 3 competing against each other.  With all three scores counting in the team of three and one dropping out in the team of 4, all other members needed to contribute on each hole.

16 points separated all 7 teams and the winning score of 109 came from Mark Hughes, Peter Cudmore, Phil Taylor and Peter Smith.  There was a tie for the runners up and they were Scott Wightman, Stuart Bourne, Rob Weavers together with Kevin Leftley, Alan Bigley, John Colligwood. These teams scored 103 points.

The average score for the day was a very high 34.2 off the yellow tees, with only 4 players dropping into the twenties, with the rest recording some good scores in the thirties – 10 birdies were posted, 4 of them by Alan Bigley.

The Mayfield Cup was won by a very good round from Pete Smith with 43 points.  Followed by Phil Taylor on 39 points, with 3 players equal for 3rd place on 38 points – Joe Carroll, Chris Buck, John Miller.

Stuart Bourne hit a great shot to win nearest the pin on the 12th and Graham Meadows hit an exceptional 2ndshot to the 5th to win nearest the pin in 2.
