Copthorne Results
A good day was had at Copthorne which was our 10th and penultimate outing for the Mayfield order of merit competition – which is getting close and will come down to the final event at Seaford Head in November.
The course was dry and the greens in excellent condition – weather wise the anti-cyclonic gloom we’ve had all week continued and this put most off wearing shorts – except one!
We had a good field of 21 competing – 7×3 balls for the team competition.
The average score for the day was 30.4, with 8 in the twenties – the lowest being 23, and the rest mostly in the low thirties.
The individual winner on the day was Guy Barker with an excellent score of 38 – he was extremely consistent with 19 out and back, whilst the runner up was Stuart Bourne with 36 (having the best back nine of the day – 21), and coming in third also with 36 was Pete Smith.
The team event was close as usual with five teams separated by only 6 points – 88 to 94.
The lowest team scored 83, but the winning team won by a margin of 6 points on 100 – this being Kelvin Paterson, John Miller and Kevan Gill
A great couple of shots by Phil Taylor won nearest the pin in two on the par 4 – 4th hole – he was seen leaving with two bottles of wine, as he was also the winner of the heads and tails.
On the Par 3 -12th hole John Collingwood found the green with an excellent shot to win nearest the pin.
Only four birdies were made all day, two from Andrew Burnett on the 1st and 11th with some lucky ricochet to land a few feet from the hole. Kevan Gill started his round well with a birdie on the first and Richard Hannam earned his on the 6th.
The day ended with a great chicken pie and mash potato.
The next event is at Seaford Head on Friday 14th November. Going into that event the top 8 in order of merit stands as follows:
1st Kevan Gill 38.25
2nd John Collingwood 37.25
3rd Pete Smith 37
4th Alan Bigley 36.75
5th John Miller 36.50
6th = Joe Carroll 36.25
6th = James Gallifant
8th Richard Hannam 36
