Captain Ablitt wins the Freddie Jones Trophy with 38 points from Gorringe and Cudmore.

A good attendance with 19 players entering the 27 hole golfing challenge at Singing Hills on a beautiful and sunny day in June. The average score (28.6) in the Freddie Jones stapleford competition was generally disappointing and the lowest of the 6 meetings so far in 2015. Indeed, a number of players found that if you missed the fairway and entered the first cut of rough you only had a 50:50 chance of finding your ball!

The morning started with a Texas scramble competition over the 9 holes of the Valley course. All players had to contribute a full share of the driving responsibilities. The winners based on the Micky Mann “Duckworth- Lewis” handicap adjustment was of course:

  • Micky Mann, Chris Buck and Ray Hamilton – net score of 32 on the par 36 course.

Micky, Chris, Ray - Texas winners

The Individual Stapleford competition was for the Freddie Jones Trophy with only two players playing to their handicap or better:-

  • Winner: Captain Fred Ablitt (38 points)
  • Runner Up: Tim “Tom” Gorringe (36 points)
  • Third Place: Peter Cudmore (35 points)

Although not appearing in the places above Ray Hamilton scored an outstanding 22 points on his back 9 – if only the cobwebs had fallen away earlier on his first outing of the year!

The Team Stapleford Competition was a close run competition with the best two stapleford from three player’s counting on each hole:-

Position Team Points
Winners Clive Butler, Captain Fred and Hon Sec Phil 76
Runners up Jerry Watkiss, Peter Cudmore and Bish 75

Phil, Clive and Fred - winning team

It should be noted that the team of Mann, Buck and Hamilton scored 80 points but having already won the morning team prize were not eligible to win this competition!

The Longest Drive was won on the 6th hole of the Rivers Course by Carl Valentine following excellent drives by Butler and Watkiss – most of us don’t go that far on our holiday!

The Nearest the Pin competition was won by Brian Day on the island 2nd Hole on the Lakes Course.   Brian has won the last two Nearest the Pin competitions – well done sir.

A special thanks must go to Captain Fred for the prizes for the day and to Hon Sec Phil Herbert for putting together a great day of golf behind the scenes – thanks chaps.

The next outing will be at the Westerham Golf Club on the 17th July competing for the societies Strokeplay and Stapleford Championships. Feel free to get your entry in early to avoid disappointment – further details will follow shortly.
