Mad March Jugs results
After the cancellation of our 2nd event at Willingdon in February, we rolled on to our 3rd outing which was held at The Dyke GC for the prestigious Mad March Jugs Pairs competition. So, on a perfect Spring morning and under clear blue skies a field of 18 competed for the pairs competition but with no individual stableford competition.
The draw was held in the clubhouse after the regular coffee and bacon bap and created a level of excitement far above expectations and safe blood pressures as slowly it was revealed who was to play with whom.
Rules: This event involved the ‘dreaded’ yellow ball for each team to be used on alternate holes with points counting double for the player with the yellow ball. Now, to be successful in this format, the key thing is to keep the yellow ball in play for the entire round to maximise your score.
Unfortunately for Jerry, his partner Peter Alfieri failed to fully embrace this concept and duly smashed his second shot into the rough on hole 1 and lost the ball. Thus, Jerry’s ‘yellow ball’ contribution for the day was the rather underwhelming responsibility of carrying it from the draw in the clubhouse to the first tee! It should be reported that even this relatively simple task was too much for the Rob Weavers and Rob Montague who, upon readying themselves for their first shot discovered that they had left theirs in the bar! Interestingly, with the team pressure now off, Jerry went on to post the highest individual score of 36. One can only speculate what might have been had they had kept the ball.
However, keeping within the spirit of the format Andrew Jenner duly lost his teams yellow ball on the 2nd hole, Scot lost his on the 3rd and finally Graham lost his on the 5th. The remaining teams completed their respective rounds without further losses but did result in many players being spotted in several uncompromising positions amongst the gorse, frantically searching seen rescuing their balls from different areas of the course and some very strange places.
The average score for the day was a low 27 but the course was in very good condition and the greens were very fast! Unfortunately for the defending champion Kevan, he had a bit of a nightmare round and his parter Graham didn’t fare much better with them posting a team score of 48 and the lowest by 3 points.
Only Jerry Watkiss played to handicap and there were 4 birdies.
The winners posted a score of 100 points along way in front of the second placed team.
