Andy Williams and John Collingwood share the championship spoils
Our 6th event of the year was held at Nevill Golf Club, a great venue for our Strokeplay and Stableford Competitions. The course was in good condition, though the normally very fast Nevill greens, were not actually that fast which confused a few. We had some welcome cloud cover to take some of the heat out of the day but returned just as we sat down for our post round drinks which enhanced the enjoyment of the day.
At the briefing before our tee times the skipper explained that for the strokeplay competition you had to finish off every hole and take provisional balls if you had any doubts about where your ball had gone. Unfortunately for Captain Kevin he lost two shots on the 16th by his ball landing directly on John Collingwoods from his drive and sadly disappearing sideways into the woods. Fortunately Kelvin got over the his desperate bad luck very quickly but not til after he told everyone about it!
We had a field of 27 players, split into 2 competitions. 12 golfers with a handicap of 18 or lower aiming to take the strokeplay shield off the concurrent 2-time winner Stuart Bourne and 15 golfers with a handicap of 19 or over competing for the stableford shield. The handicap secretary made the day even more complex by including a team event which was unscheduled!
There were a couple of out of control trolley incidents on the day with Rob Weaver halfway through his back swing and with great resolve stopping his swing and chasing after his trolley which had set off on its own. He was lucky compared with Jerry, who having made yet another 3 putt on the previous green found he had no bag to deposit his putter – his trolley having decided it couldn’t watch anymore and made a dash for a ditch some 70yds down the next fairway! He was grateful for all the helpful comments and support from his fellow team players!

The team competition had 6 teams of 4 and 1 team of 3 competing against each other. With all three scores counting in the team of three and one dropping out in the team of 4, all members needed to contribute on each hole.
15 points separated all 7 teams and the winning score of 105 came from Phil and Chris Taylor, Graham Meadows and Keith Townsend. The runners up were Mark Hughes, Graham Smith, Rob Weavers and Will Lunn with a score of 99.
The average score for the day was 31.63 off the yellow tees, with 7 players dropping into the twenties, with the rest recording some good scores in the thirties – 10 birdies were posted.
The strokeplay competition was won by Andy Williams playing on his own course with a net score of 72. Closely followed by Mark Hughes and defending champion Stuart Bourne on 74. With strokeplay you have to finish out the hole and count all shots. Rod Lunn spent some time explaining his 11 on the 13th and the fact he had played 5 before passing the ladies tee!
The Stableford Competition was won by a very good round from John Collingwood scoring 40 points. He was closely followed by last months winner James Gallifant.
Stuart Bourne hit a great shot to win nearest the pin on the 12th and Guy Barker hit two excellent shots to win nearest the pin in 2 on the 8th.
An excellent day was rounded off with a lovely meal of salmon, a few drinks and the normal ‘bon homie’ of and MGS day.
