The weather at Pyecombe near Brighton was cloudy, reasonably windy and featured drizzle for a large part of the day. Nevertheless, 19 players enjoyed a course in excellent condition, and a genuinely competitive day of golf (for most of us).

Some of the shots from the 1st tee set the tone. The normally reliable Rod Lunn duffed one short and right. By the end of the day, he was well beaten by his brother Will (who was still carrying a shoulder injury).  The opposite type of shot by Graham Meadows went short and left, narrowly missing the club house before landing on the putting green, passing perilously close to players practicing, and disturbing the occupants of the club house bar. Only pride was hurt and they had to suffer the usual joshing in such situations.

The individual competition was won by Andrew Jenner with 37 points, winning by 2 from John Collingwood. The average score was a relatively low 28.8 points reflecting how long the course played and the challenging weather. The 3 lowest scores were 10, 16 and 20 points. These players let themselves down, their team mates down, and anyone else following behind them on the course. 

The team competition was won by the team of Richard Hannam, John Miller, Rob Montagu and Kevan Gill. Their score, the total of their best 3 scores on each hole was 107 points, 2 ahead of their nearest rival. The other teams followed closely behind. How the losing teams lamented missed putts, or berated team members who hadn’t pulled their weight.

Nearest the pin in two was won by Phil Taylor but embarrassingly no one was on the green for the nearest pin!
