A bright but cold start to Eastbourne Downs with new member Kelvin Paterson, Captain Peter Cudmore and Hon Sec David Howroyd leading off

The 2016 season started with some very good scoring at Eastbourne Downs

A good attendance at Eastbourne Downs GC with 18 players keen to play the first match of the year on a cold February day with a fair amount of water under foot, despite the chalk base of the course. Attendance would have been 19 but for the late withdrawal of Mr Bishop having strained something at ping pong the day before!

We welcomed two guests Kelvin and Steve whom we are hopefully might be tempted to join the society in the future.

Indeed, Steve Brown, one of those guests, had an exceptional day scoring 48 stableford points (yes 48 points!) – which was comfortably the best score of the day in tough conditions. He turns professional next week.

In terms of the Individual Stableford competition for society members one point and count- back separated the top 3 as follows:-

  • Winner: Kevin Weaver (38 points playing off 15)
  • Runner Up: Dave Stocker (37 points; 20 on the back 9; playing off 26)
  • Third Place: Malcolm Staplehurst (37 points; 19 on the back 9; playing off 14)

The average stableford score for the day was 34.2 points which is very good.

The Team Stableford Competition was not tight with the highest three individual scorers on the day all being in the same team so it was won by a country mile!!

Position Team Points
Winners Kevin Weaver, Dave Stocker & Steve Brown 106
Runners up David Howroyd, Kelvin Paterson & Peter Cudmore 86
Third Malcolm Staplehurst, Paul Hillman & Dereck Coppard 84
Fourth Clive Butler, Barry Browning & Andy Tippett 81
Fifth Micky Mann, Jerry Watkiss & Brian Cheesmur 80
Sixth Pat Layen, Ken Wapling & Brian Day 74

The Nearest the Pin (12th) was won by Brian Cheesmur with an excellent shot on a very tough hole.

The Longest Drive (18th) was won by Dereck Coppard with a very well placed drive on very gusty final hole.

A smattering of birdies were achieved on the day:
• Watkiss, Brown & Coppard getting 4s on the par 5- 2nd hole
• Hillman, Mann & Wapling getting 3s on the par 4 – 4th hole

A big thank you goes to David Howroyd for organising a very successfully first event as Hon Sec, ably assisted by the new captain Peter Cudmore.

The next event is for the first silverware of the year (the Mad March Jugs) at East Brighton on the 18th March. More details to follow but feel free to get your name down for this event early.
We are always keen to welcome new members to the club so if you know anyone who might be interested to check out our website and encourage them to come along.
