Society Strokeplay Championship

Andy Bishop with 40 points wins the Society Stableford Shield

An excellent turnout of 22 on a relatively long and testing course which was reflected in the average stableford score for the day being just 28.73, the lowest of 2019.  The weather was good with the sun on our backs although relatively cool.

The society welcomed Messrs Bishop, Bennett, Gorringe, Goulding and Layen to their first monthly meeting of the year.  A big success was that this year Ken did not wash his trolley in the lake as he did the previous year !!

Hever Castle GC hosted us very well with the day ending in a traditional Bangers & Mash meal and the presentation of the prizes.

Society Strokeplay Championship

Open to those society members with a handicap of 18 or less saw Tim Gorringe putting together a very good and solid round of golf with two of only three birdies achieved by the society on the day.  The result was as follows: -

Place Player Score
Winner Tim Gorringe (gross 87/ nett 69) -3
Second Andrew Burnett (gross 88/nett 70) -2
Third Micky Mann (gross 89/ nett 73) +1

Society Stableford Shield

Open to those society members with a handicap of 19 or above saw Andy Bishop win by a country mile.   The result was as follows: -

Place Player Score
Winner  Andy  Bishop 40
Second Chris Buck 31
Third Ken Wapling & Paul Hillman 29

Winner Nearest the Rope:  Andy William just a putter length from the rope.

Winner Nearest the Pin:  Chris Buck with fine effort over water to within 5 feet – but did not make the birdie on this occasion!

Team Stableford

The best two scores from the teams of three counted (adjusted for teams of four):-

Place Team Score
Winner Kevin Leftley, Andrew Burnett, Alan Bigley & Dereck Coppard 79
Second Pat Layen, Tim Gorringe, Micky Mann & Jerry Watkiss 77
Third Andy Tippett, Andy Bishop, Kelvin Paterson & John Collingwood 76

Anorak moment of the report is the day saw only 3 birdies all on par 3s !!! This takes the seasons total to 27 (28 last year at the same point in the season).  The 3 at Hever included two from one of the days winner who tells us he has never had a two on a par three in the past – we remain unconvinced:-

Player Hole Score
Tim Gorringe 6th 2 on the par 3 (SI 18)
Tim Gorringe 12th 2 on the par 3 (SI 15)
Kevin Leftley 12th 2 on the par 3 (SI 15)

The next monthly meeting is at Nizels on the 19thJuly– individual and team stableford competitions off full society handicaps – full details nearer the time.  Hopefully we will attract another 20+ players to a course we very much enjoyed last year.
