Willingdon – November 2022

We look forward to seeing you on Friday when it looks like we have a decent day weather wise in amongst all the recent rain – that said it is still likely to be a little wet under foot. A warm welcome to Rex Dinnage joining us at this event as a guest

Willingdon is described as a stunning 18 holes of golf situated against the backdrop of the Sussex Downs. The course offers a good test for the experienced player as well as being popular for the more social golfer.

The history of this club really began in 1898 when a group of local worthies, including the Marquess of Willingdon, put together a simple 9-hole layout with a corrugated iron hut as their Clubhouse. This course survived seven years or so until 1905, when the legendary J.H. Taylor was commissioned to redesign the layout to a more traditional 18 holes. In 1925, the celebrated Dr. Alister MacKenzie the designer of the little known course in the USA the Augusta National expanded the layout to make more sense of the natural features of the land. The course bears the particular hallmark of MacKenzie’s with two tier greens featuring on the 8th, 9th, 12th and 18th holes.

Please be at the tee and ready to go 5 mins before your tee time and I respectfully suggest we should be aiming to be back in the clubhouse at the 19th in circa 4 hours. Please keep up with the group in front and not just be comfortable with being slightly ahead of the group behind!

The weather forecast is pretty good so we should see some decent scores.
