MGS Championship results

Jerry Watkiss with a nett 2 over par wins the Society Strokeplay Championship;  Ken Wapling edges out Chris Buck on count-back with 37 points to win the Society Stableford Shield

A good turnout of 17 on what was a lovely summers day enjoyed “The Darenth” which is a relatively short but tight in places course.  The average stableford score of 30.59 reflected  a tough day for most in terms of putting a good consistent score together – a number of us probably did not give the course the full respect it deserved in what was benign and helpful conditions.  The weather was very hot at times with a few of us wilting around the edges by the end.     The course itself was in excellent condition and a new one for many of the society but one we should definitely return to in the future.

It was also good to have a socially distanced pint after the round and an informal prize giving with vice-captain Mark announcing the winners as follows:

Society Strokeplay Championship

Open to those society members with a handicap of 19 or less saw Jerry Watkiss tame the course better than most winning by a comfortable margin.  The result was as follows: -

Place Player Score
Winner Jerry Watkiss (gross 91/ nett 74) +2
Second Micky Mann (gross 92/ nett 77) +5
Third Mark Hughes (gross 95/ nett 78) +6

Society Stableford Shield

Open to those society members with a handicap of 20 or above saw Ken Wapling on his first outing of 2020 pickimg-up the honours.    The result was as follows: -

Place Player Score
Winner Ken Wapling 37 (B9CB 19)
Second Chris Buck 37 (B9CB 17)
Third Graham Meadows 35

No Nearest the Pin/ Rope or Longest Drive competitions held due to Covid 19 restrictions and need to handle markers – hopefully, we can find a safe way to reintroduce these for our next event!

The next monthly meeting is Captains Day at Cooden Beach which is a real favourite course on the 21st August –– full details nearer the time.  Hopefully we will attract 20+ players to support  Captain James with the prestigious Freddie Jones Foundation Cup at stake – should be a fun event.
