Kevin Leftley wins on his debut outing on a cold but sunny day at East Brighton
The society welcomed Kevin Leftley to his first outing with the Mayfield Golf Society. A brave (or is that foolish) group of six keen society members played our first event of the year at East Brighton Golf Club who looked after us very well on the day. The weather was bright and sunny, but a moderate breeze brought a cold bite at times when out on the exposed parts of the course. That said the holes through the valley on the front nine were very pleasant in a little spring like micro-climate.
The highlight of the round was at the half-way house where we stopped for a brew and pastry. Our Hon Sec David took one small bite from his pastry and put it on the table next to his tea. When he looked away for a split second a seagull saw his opportunity and flew down and swiped the remainder from his grasp and off he flew with his prize. As David was buying a replacement the lady behind the counter said yes, the seagulls do that a lot!!
Kevin on his first outing proved to be a very strong and solid, playing off a handicap of 14 which was good enough to edge out Mann and Howroyd for the spoils: –
Individual Stableford
Place | Individual | Score |
Winner | Kevin Leftley | 32 |
Second | Micky Mann | 31 (18 back 9 count back) |
Third | David Howroyd | 31 (16 back 9 count back) |
Team Stableford – No competition was contested: –
Winner Longest Drive (Hole 18th): David Howroyd hit a very nice drive down the middle edging out all the competition.
Winner Nearest the Pin (Hole 7th): Micky Mann hitting a peach of a seven iron to within 4ft on this 155-yard hole. He missed the putt (just)!!
As an aside following a conversation with Paul Hillman the Hon Handicap Sec will be recording all the two’s made in 2018 with a small prize being awarded to the player with the most at the AGM – just for members to note at this stage. After one outing the total is zero!!
However, worthy of note were two birdies in tough conditions on the South Downs as follows:
Kelvin Paterson a 4 on the (550-yard par 5) 5th
John Collingwood a 3 on the (387-yard par 4) 12th
The February fixture will be held at Lewes Golf Club on the 16th February – we hope to get at least 15 to 16 players along to this old favourite – further details to follow shortly.
