Eastbourne Downs Results

Captain Gallifant wins at Eastbourne Down with a fast start to his round on drizzly cold day on this very dry South Downs course.

The format was changed due to a late drop out and an odd number of players making the Mad March jugs pairs competition unviable.  Instead an individual stableford competition was completed by the 11 MGS members in attendance.  The society adopted a pragmatic and sensibly conservative approach to golfing with the Covid 19 outbreak recently having been announced as a pandemic and the UK government placing restrictions on every day activities. Scoring was surprisingly excellent with the average stableford score being a creditable and high 32 points !!

Unfortunately, Hon Sec Howroyd retired unwell after completing only 7 holes leaving the remaining 10 of us to soldier on.  By this point Captain James had already amassed 19 points after just 6 holes. James was assured that Jerry was actually saying “clucking bell” under his breath, a new golfing term for “well played” as James dropped the ball in to the hole for another 4 point reward.

By one account Alan Bigley is now hitting the ball so far we have a new competition “Nearest the pub.”  Anyway, I understand he did drive the par four green on at least one occasion during his round which is impressive – and with an 8 iron (joking).

The next monthly meeting has been cancelled as a result of the current Covid 19 outbreak.  We hope to be able to play again in May at Copthorne, we shall see.  In any case I am sure at the next event we will all have a few beers to celebrate a round of golf and the pubs being back open again, hopefully.  Best Wishes and stay safe everyone.
