Copthorne Mad March (in MAY) Jugs – Order of Play – May 2021

THE COURSE

Copthorne Golf Club was formed in 1892 and later reconstituted in 1903. Full records exist from 1903 and it was thought for some time that the Club had only existed from the inaugural meeting of 1903. However, in 1969 the Club came into possession of two silver medals, one is inscribed ‘Copthorne Golf Club’ and the other ‘Copthorne Golf Club won by Stanley Russell in 1894’. The medals bear an 1892 hallmark. The Royal and Ancient Club of St. Andrews were consulted and after a search the following record was found in the Golfers Guide of 1897 – ‘Copthorne Golf Club – instituted in 1892.

The course is an 18 hole, par 71 (6651 yard) heathland golf course

Mad March Jugs (Trophy Event)

The Mad March Jugs competition is a pairs Stableford competition usually played with a yellow ball counting double.  This year as a result of the CV19 pandemic we will operate the competition differently.

Each player should have two balls (ohh err) at the start of the round – ideally a white ball and non-white ball.  Each team member should be allocated either odd or even on which holes they have the opportunity to score double points.  I suggest the non-white ball is used on the “double bubble holes” only until/if it is lost.  When a hole is completed the player nominated as odd should double their stableford points on the holes 1, 3, 5 etc only if they are still using their original ball.  If the original ball is lost the score will revert to their standard stableford score for that hole i.e. it will not be doubled. The same will apply for the even player on holes 2, 4, 6 etc.

For the pairs competition the combined stableford score on each hole will count.  NB: Player 1 nominated as odd (Kelvin this could be you) scores 1 stableford points on the third hole (they are still playing their original double bubble ball) so score doubles to 2 points.  Their partner plays a blinder but was nominated “evens” and gets 3 points, so just their single score counts on that odd numbered hole.  The team score would be 5 points on that hole. I hope that is clear if not ask !!

Individual Stableford

A secondary 18-hole stableford competition playing off full society handicaps will be played (the score will not include the doubling up element above).  Please just mark your normal “standard” stableford score on the cards which will be included in the player of the year competition at the end of the season.
