Blue skies at Pyecombe

Under clear azure skies just 8 hardy golfers played on the first outing of 2017. It was pretty much a perfect winters day though tricky with varying areas of frozen ground – especially on the greens!

So, it was a case of adapting to the conditions rather than the ‘target golf’ we are normally used to with some adapting better than others. There were plenty of long drives but it was the second shot that was the problem on most holes. Go for the green, lay up or chip and run was the hard decision to make and clearly Ken Wapling mastered this aspect of the game as he managed a very creditable 37pts. David Howroyd was also pretty canny around the greens and came in with a great score of 34pts.

Clive Butler on his first official role as Vice Captain obviously made his seasons intentions quite clear by winning both the longest drive and nearest the pin in two. Well done Clive but your role, if you read the small print of your contract, is simply to toss the coin for heads and tails rather than take the prizes!!

It was a fun but challenging day out and over a meal of sausage and mash it was the feeling of those present that we should definitely add Pyecombe to our fixture list but at a warmer time of year. Given the slightly disappointing turn out it was also discussed whether we should hold a Jan or Feb meeting but perhaps thats something we can talk about over the coming months.

So on to next month –  we shall be at Lewis where hopefully the good weather will continue and we will have a few more to sample the delights of this downland course.
