Anniversary Trophy – Highwoods Golf Course – September 2020

After a very successful Captains Day (thanks James) we have another good turnout for our September meeting at Highwoods which is a venue not played by the society for a very long time – if at all – Pat will know for sure?  We also look to be blessed by decent weather for our THURSDAY outing departing for once from our usual third Friday of the month format.

We are playing for the prestigious Anniversary Trophy which was first played for in 2017 to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of our society which was established in 1997 by several members of Mayfield Cricket Club who had shared a pint or two and bemoaned the lack of golfing facilities in the area. The concept of the Mayfield Golfing Society was born. Watch out for Mr John Collingwood who wil be looking to retain the trophy he won last year with 46 points at Cooden Beach – a severe handicap haircut followed as a consequence !!

Our venue Highwoods Golf Club is situated on the outskirts of Bexhill on Sea close to the Sussex Coast. The course was established in 1924 under the supervision of J H Taylor and KG Hawtree and has matured over the years into one of the area’s finest venues. Measuring 6,218 yards with a hard to match par of 70, Highwoods offers a fair challenge along tree-lined fairways with a stream coming into play on six of the holes.

IMPORTANT : Please note we must strictly observe the recent government guidance which is now legally enforceable as follows:-

  • to wear face masks in all communal areas whilst at our society meetings for the foreseeable future. Please bring a mask and some hand sanitiser!
  • The second is the rule of 6. We must not gather in groups larger than 6. We are in part managing this by teeing off in a predominately three-ball format wherever we can.

We urge all society members to adhere to these rules and keep to the same playing group as much as possible. A short presentation is possible once we have finished using the socially distanced tables of 4 that are available at this club that are spaced 2 metres apart.  It is therefore vitally important we do not move furniture in the club’s house and especially on the patio – assuming we can potentially gather outside with a little late afternoon sun – fingers crossed – see forecast further down the page.

PLEASE DO ALSO REMEMBER THE FOLLOWING – IT IS IMPORTANT THAT WE REMAIN COVID COMPLIANT AND SAFE

  • Arrive at the club in your golf gear, ready to tee off.
  • Keep a minimum distance of two metres, from your playing partners with no physical contact at any time (James please note)
  • We also recommend that members carry their own personal bottles of disinfectant with them in order to keep their hands disinfected whilst playing golf
  • We recommend that members do not use ballwashers (ohh err!) and refrain from touching stray tees and golf balls other than their own.
  • No golfers are to touch, remove or attend flag pins whilst playing golf.
  • Gimmies will be allowed within 18 inches (putter grip length or so) – common sense applies.
  • Bunkers are in play – but the ball can be placed in the bunker to achieve a reasonable lie as the raking of bunkers are prohibited.
