Alan Bigley wins the Strokeplay cup with Ken Wapling winning the Stableford shield at Lamberhurst Golf Club

Fourteen ladies and gentlemen enjoyed a great society day at Lamberhurst with the Strokeplay and Stapleford Shield up for grabs. The course was in good condition with the greens a little slower than most players anticipated.  A warm welcome to Graham Riddall who joined us for the first time.

Strokeplay Cup

This competition was competed for by those members with a handicap of 18 or less – the holder Mr Mark Hughes was defending his title hard earned in 2016.  Playing strokeplay is always a tough challenge for us amateurs as we are always likely to lose the odd ball or encounter a hole that does not suit us.  The winner was Mr Alan Bigley winning his first society event since joining the society: –

Place Individual Gross Score Nett Score
Winner Alan Bigley 85 75
Second Jerry Watkiss 90 75
Third Mark Hughes 92 79

Stableford Shield

This competition was competed for by those members with a handicap of 19 or greater – the holder being Mr Frank Goulding who was also present to defend his title in a tough field of players many of whom already have a win under their belt in 2017. The winner was Mr Ken Wapling with by far the best round of the day and the only player who bettered their handicap: –

Place Individual Points
Winner Ken Wapling 38
Second Peter Cudmore 35
Third Frank Goulding 33

Winner Nearest the Pin (Hole 7th):  Jerry Watkiss with a very solid shot to 12ft on this reasonably straightforward stroke index 17 hole – he then went on to make a comfortable par.

Winner Nearest the Line (Hole 15th):  Alan Bond – with good drive to within 8 paces of the centre of the fairway.

No team competition was played this month

A big thank you to Jerry Watkiss for organising proceedings on the day. The prize giving was conducted over a very good and enjoyable meal (probably the best this year) served up by some very friendly staff. A good day out.

Player of Year Trophy.  Mr Ken Wapling and Mr Brian Day are having a real dog fight at the top of this table with them swapping places at nearly every event.  Brian led the table with (36.75) last month but Ken’s fine 38 points at Lamberhurst is enough to go top again with 8 months of the season now completed. That said several players such as Kelvin Paterson, Carl Valentine, Jerry Watkiss and Pat Layen are hot on their heels – that said a good score from the chasing pack at Seaford Head next month could make all the difference – it often does!

Our next meeting is traditionally our most popular at Seaford Head Golf Course on the 15th September with a full day of Texas Scramble followed by Individual Stableford competitions to be competed for.  A course, I might add, that when the conditions are good (light breeze and sun) has produced some very high individual scores in previous MGS society days – yes Barry we still remember 2012!
