Paterson & Buck win the Mad March Jugs 2017

A good turnout of 16 players competed for the Mad March Jugs.  After a week of dry weather the course was in excellent condition and we were hosted very well by our hosts The Neville Golf Club The average score for the day was a very respectable 30.66 (30.9 at East Brighton on the corresponding fixture in 2016.

For the Mad March Jugs a “special” yellow ball is alternated between the pairings with the points scored with that ball counting double.  The pairings were drawn out of the hat immediately before play commenced.  The competition was both fierce and enjoyable.  The winners were:-

Position Team Points
Winners Kelvin Paterson & Chris Buck 76
Runners up Dereck Coppard & Ken Wapling 75
Third Mark Hughes & Jerry Watkiss 71

7 out of the 8 teams manage to nurse the yellow ball around the 18 holes without losing it! Also worthy of note was Ken’s 10 pointer!! scored with a birdie on the very difficult par 5 (13th.) Other hotshots scoring birdies, (including 2 from Mark) were:-

Player Hole Score
Andy Tippett 1st 3 on the Par 4
Chris Buck 10th 4 on the Par 5
Micky Mann 10th 4 on the Par 5
Mark Hughes 13th 4 on the Par 5
Ken Wapling 13th 4 on the Par 5
Mark Hughes 15th 2 on the Par 3

A very competitive secondary Individual Stableford competition was held with 11 players scoring 30+.  Well done to Brian who won with a very strong 36 points on a tricky course with a bit of run on the fairways and quick greens for this time of year.  The top three were as follows:-

  • Winner: Brian Day (36 points)
  • Runner Up: Kelvin Paterson (35 points) – second for the second event running
  • Third Place: Micky Mann (34 points)

The Nearest the Pin (11th) was won by Micky Mann with a good shot getting to within 15 feet of a tricky pin.

The Longest Drive (10h) was won by Mark Hughes with a peach just pipping Jerry Watkiss who were playing in the same team.

A polite notice for our future events is that all members and groups should look to keep pace with the group in front of them and not to just keep ahead of the group behind.  We should be aiming to complete our rounds within 4 to 4½ hours.  Your goodwill and effort to achieve this target would be very much appreciated by our membership, in particular in the colder months.

A big thank you goes to Jerry for organising a very successfully event in the absence of the Hon Sec and Vice-Captain aided and abetted by Micky the Handicap Sec.

A further big thank you goes to Tim Gorringe for organising a fabulous looking Spring Tour to Belgium with 12 confirmed attendees – a good number. Please ensure your Advanced Passenger Details e.g. passport numbers etc are with Tim or Tips as soon as possible.

Indeed due to the Spring Tour our next event is a little earlier than normal on the 7th April at Westerham Golf Club another great venue.  Details will be issued by David our Hon Sec as usual but please do get your name down for this event as early as possible. It would be nice to see an attendance again of 16+ reflecting our thriving club.
