Coppard & Watkiss win the Mad March Jugs

A splendid turnout of 20 players competed for the Mad March Jugs at East Brighton golf club. The course was dry with relatively quick greens on a dry but very cold day on the Sussex downs. That said the average score for the day was a very respectable 30.9 with the majority of players impressed with the course and the views of Brighton and the Sussex coast.

We welcomed another new member James Gallifant who joined fellow society newbies Kelvin Patterson and Steve Brown who both joined in February.

For the Mad March Jugs a “special” yellow ball is alternated between the pairings with the points scored with that ball counting double and added to the single score of the playing partner. The pairings were drawn out of the hat immediately before play commenced. The competition was both fierce and enjoyable. The winners were:-

Position Team Points
Winners Dereck Coppard & Jerry Watkiss 117
Runners up Kelvin Patterson & Brian Day 104
Third Brian Cheesmur & Barry Browning 103

A secondary Individual Stableford competition was held and as you might expect a number of the above were in the running for this competition as well. The top 3 were as follows:-

  • Winner: Jerry Watkiss (41 points)
  • Runner Up: Dereck Coppard (38 points; 17 on the back 9 count back)
  • Third Place: Micky Mann (38 points; 16 on the back 9 count back)

The Nearest the Pin (16th) was won by Clive Butler with a great shot. Not resting on his laurels he sank the putt for a very impressive birdie 2.

The Longest Drive (6th) was won by Steve Brown with a cracker on a hole with out of bounds playing on your mind to the right.

A big thank you goes to Jerry Watkiss and Andy Tippett for organising a very successfully second event of the year in the absence of the Hon Sec and Club Captain who will return from holiday and sickness to the fray in April.

A further big thank you goes to Tim (Tom) Gorringe for organising a fabulous looking Spring Tour to France with 16 confirmed attendees – a great number. A real shame that Jerry’s handicap has been cut just before the tour commences!

The next event is on the 15th April and is likely to be on The Kingfisher Course at Mannings Heath which we have not visited for a while -where a degree of straight hitting is required !! Details are still to be finally confirmed and more details as always will follow but please do get your name down for this event as early as possible. It would be nice to see attendance again in the 20s reflecting a thriving club.

East Brighton Friday 18 March

Spring Greetings to all members!  March is here, days are lengthening, the sap’s rising, and hopefully golf courses throughout the area are finally drying out. It’s a measure of how wet it’s been that even a downland course like Eastbourne Downs was still the worse for water last month. Below are details of this month’s… Continue Reading
